Silence is golden

"And so tonight – to you, the great silent majority of my fellow Americans – I ask for your support."
-- President Richard Nixon, 1969
I’m fortunate to have a small network of allies, well-wishers, hangers-on, and grudgingly respectful enemies who help me find rare Magic products. I mention this because From the Vault: Relics is starting to find its way to stores, and some of said people have promised to let me know when one is available near me.
I honestly don’t understand some of the comments I’ve seen about Relics out there, specifically at the inclusion of some of the less powerful (less overpowered?) cards like Ivory Tower and Black Vise. Apparently they didn’t get the memo about the From the Vault series being a product for collectors, not competitors, nor the one about all the reasons a card becomes famous, not all of which include winning tournaments.
The continuation (and very high quality) of these type of collector-oriented products suggests that Wizards of the Coast is in fact trying to have everything both ways. It does seem to be working, for now – it’s not hard to imagine the potential for products like this to be jeopardized if they get enough negative feedback from the competitive types (old cards, even with unique foil processes and the new card frame, aren’t generally very helpful to them since Legacy events have generally low payouts). Does it sound too implausible to suggest that Magic could ever stop being the medium for the world’s greatest fantasy art? Well, flavorful creatures with mechanical drawbacks are already basically gone, thanks partly to demands for ever more power. What do you suppose Spike might decide he doesn’t like next?
